Year in a nutshell

Smashed his own world record to take Olympic gold in the men's 100m breaststroke.

City of Derby swimmer Peaty won by more than a second and a half. It was the first Olympic gold for a British man in the pool in 28 years.

He helped Britain to a silver in the 4x100m medley with a blistering split - faster than his world record - as the United States team prevailed, with Michael Phelps claiming a record 23rd gold.

Peaty was once so afraid of water his mother struggled to bathe him but overcame the phobia and was selected to trial for a swimming club after taking part in a school gala.

Mum Caroline travelled the country with him as he progressed through open meets, county, Midland, national and British Championships.

He rose to wider prominence in 2014, taking two golds at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He has also won eight European and three world titles.

Peaty became the first man to go under 58 seconds in the 100m breaststroke at the world trials last year.

His Olympic gold was Britain's first at the Rio Games, and the first for a British male swimmer since Adrian Moorhouse 26 years earlier.

Peaty's 74-year-old grandmother Mavis Williams also became a star during Rio. The self-styled 'Olympic Nan' made waves on social media with her enthusiastic tweets.

What he said: "I did it for my country and that means so much to me."
