Andy Roddick has never lost a first-round match at Wimbledon in 11 attempts

Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro advanced into the second round of the men's draw at Wimbledon with straight-sets victories.

Eighth seed Roddick of the United States beat Germany's Andreas Beck 6-4 7-6 6-3 in two hours and 15 minutes.

And 24th seed Del Potro of Argentina enjoyed a comfortable 6-1 6-4 6-3 win against Italy's Flavio Cipolla.

Fifth seed Robin Soderling of Sweden also progressed after a 6-4 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-5) win against Philipp Petzschner.

Soderling needed three hours and 14 minutes to finally snuff out the threat of German Petzschner, ranked 62 places below him.

Seventh seed David Ferrer advanced with a straight sets 6-4 6-4 6-4 win against France's Benoit Paire and now has the prospect of facing American Ryan Harrison in the second round.

Roddick, who has never lost a first-round match at Wimbledon, was in scintillating service form, smashing four successive aces to take the first game of the Court One encounter.

The three-time finalist sent down 30 in total, although his German opponent provided stiff resistance at times during the second set.

"The second set tie-break was big for me because there's a big difference between two sets up and one-set all," said Roddick, who will play Romania's Victor Hanescu in the second round.

"He had a pretty smart gameplan and was going for his shots a lot, but I felt like I was playing better than him so I didn't want to let him back in.

"I'm pretty happy with where my game is right now. I feel healthy and I know what it takes to go deep at this tournament."

Del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, broke his opponent's serve six times to complete an easy victory in a match held over from Monday evening because of rain.

The Argentine will play Belgium's Olivier Rochus in the second round.

Number 15 seed Gilles Simon of France faced a tougher battle to book his second-round place, beating compatriot Edouard Roger-Vasselin 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6, while 21st seed Fernando Verdasco was taken to a fifth-set decider in an entertaining encounter against former world number eight Radek Stepanek, winning 2-6 4-6 6-3 7-6 9-7.

Verdasco plays Robin Haase of the Netherlands in round two, and Simon lines up against Dudi Sela of Israel.

Meanwhile, 23rd seed Janko Tipsarevic was forced to withdrew from his first-round tie with Ivo Karlovic because of injury.

Argentina's 25th seed Juan Ignacio Chela took four sets to defeat Australia's Marinko Matosevic 6-4 6-4 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 and faces Alex Bogomolov Jr in round two, while Spain's 26th seed Guillermo Garcia Lopez plays Slovakia's Karol Beck, after his first-round opponent Andrey Golubev retired in the third set.

Other seeds to progress were Viktor Troicki (13), Nicolas Almagro (16), Mikhail Youzhny (18), David Nalbandian (28) and Marcos Baghdatis (32).

But Croatia's 27th seed Marin Cilic fell to compatriot and former world number three Ivan Ljubicic 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-3 6-4, and 29th seed Nikolay Davydenko was beaten by Australian Bernard Tomic.
