Agnieszka Radwanska to play at inaugural Nottingham WTA event

Former world number two and 2012 Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska will compete at Nottingham's inaugural WTA event in June.

The 26-year-old, who lost in the first round of the French Open on Monday, has won 14 WTA singles titles.

"It is special to be a part of this tournament in its first year," said the Polish world number 14. "My best results have come on grass in Britain.

"Hopefully this will be the preparation I need going into Wimbledon."

Radwanska will play at the Aegon Open Nottingham as a wildcard following her early exit on clay in Paris.

She was the junior singles champion at Wimbledon in 2005 and won the Eastbourne International in 2008, but the Krakow-born right-hander is yet to go all the way in a Grand Slam at senior level.

Radwanska came closest when she beat Heather Watson on her way to the Wimbledon final in 2012, eventually losing to Serena Williams in three sets.

Meanwhile, world number 20 Peng Shuai of China has been forced to pull out of the Nottingham Open after suffering a lower back injury at the French Open.

The Aegon Open Nottingham takes place from 8-14 June, while the men's new ATP World Tour event begins on 22 June, the week before Wimbledon. Qualifying for the WTA tournament start on 6 June at the Nottingham Tennis Centre.
