Aljaz Bedene's career-high ranking of 71 came in 2013

British number two Aljaz Bedene beat Argentine world number 63 Diego Schwartzman in three sets to progress to the second round of the Aegon Open.

Bedene is preparing for his first Wimbledon since switching nationality from Slovenia to the UK in March.

The 25-year-old, ranked 74th, won 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 at Nottingham.

British number three Kyle Edmund was knocked out by Tunisia's world number 83 Malek Jaziri, losing both sets on tie-breaks 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5).

Bedene will now face French eighth seed Adrian Mannarino in the second round.

"I played him once in a Challenger on clay. I know his weaknesses and his good shots - I'll definitely work around his backhand," he told BBC Radio Nottingham.

"He likes grass and he's a lefty, so a little different than today. If I play as I can, I can definitely win."

Bedene could be joined by British number four James Ward, who was a set up and about to serve at 5-4 down in the second against American Tim Smyczek before play was suspended because of rain.

Austrian Jurgen Melzer, a former world number eight and French Open semi-finalist, beat his younger brother Gerald in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying.

Jurgen, 34, who was won doubles titles at SW19 and the US Open, is 10 years older than his sibling and won 6-1 6-4.

There was British success, with 284th-ranked Joshua Milton, 25, beating Czech Jan Hernych 3-6 6-3 6-4 to progress to round two.

Dan Evans, a former British number two and Davis Cup team member who is now ranked 752nd, overcame Czech Jaroslav Pospisil 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-2).

And Edward Corrie, 27, went past the first round of qualifying for the first time by beating Spanish seventh seed Daniel Munoz-De La Nava 6-3 6-1.

But Britons Richard Gabb (retired hurt), Daniel Cox and Alexander Ward suffered defeats.

Players can win one of 16 places in the main draw by winning three rounds of qualification matches. Wimbledon starts on Monday, 29 June.
