    Niemeier 4-6 4-6 Raducanu

Great Britain's Emma Raducanu speaking after victory over Germany's Jule Niemeier: "I think I played some really good tennis today. Playing Jule on an indoor hard court isn't easy. It's a game of holding serve and trying to get a break where you can.

"I haven't obviously played a match in a long time so these are small sharpness things that come the more matches I play. I'm very happy with how I regrouped and how I managed to close out that last game."

On taking energy from the crowd during the match: "We had a lot of support so thanks to everyone over here. Obviously it helps a lot having so much support. The team, each and every one of us, we are all playing our role. We wouldn't be here without every member.

"Very proud of myself and also very proud of every team member playing their role as best as possible and sacrificing certain things.

"Everyone, especially Anne [Keothavong] leading us into the finals and we are starting at 1-0 up."

There was a sombre mood around Malaga earlier this week after the heavy rain and flash flooding which forced the opening day of the Billie Jean King Cup to be postponed.

Thankfully the rain stopped on Wednesday afternoon and the water levels had reduced significantly by yesterday.

But there was amazement in the Andalusian city this morning, among locals and tourists alike, when slurry water started rapidly flowing down the usually bone dry Guadalmedina river.

It was like someone had just turned on the tap.

Locals said it happened because a dam in the mountains north of the city - Presa del Limonero - had been opened.

The controlled measure was done to alleviate the dangerous levels of water which had built up after the second Dana weather system that hit the southern part Spain this week.

British number one Katie Boulter leads the British team for the Billie Jean King Cup finals.

Boulter, who could make appear in her 13th tie, has a 12-4 win record in BJK Cup matches.

The 28-year-old won the biggest title of her career earlier this season at the WTA 500 event in San Diego and she followed that up with another title at the Nottingham Open.

She has also ended the 2024 season on a strong note, finishing runner-up at the Hong Kong Open.

Despite falling to Diana Shnaider in the final, Boulter moved into the world's top 25 for the first time.

Emma Raducanu celebrated her 22nd birthday on Wednesday.

So in time-honoured tradition, she is made to feel slightly embarrassed by a rendition of 'Happy Birthday'.

We've all been there. But probably not with a brass band playing the tune and a few thousands heartily singing along.

Even the cuddly BJK Cup mascot joins in!

Now we look ahead to the second match of the evening - GB's Katie Boulter v Germany's Laura Siegmund.

If Boulter wins, GB are through to the quarter-finals. Should Siegmund triumph, we will have a doubles decider.

That match is scheduled to get under way at 19.50 GMT - so if you want to grab a cuppa between matches, you need to get a shift on.

What a return that is for Emma Raducanu after almost two months out injured.

She said earlier this week that she felt "really fit" and that win proves it.

The 22-year-old has played just 34 matches this year after returning from the wrist and ankle surgeries which ruled her out of most of last season.

But she has starred for her country, first at the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers in April and again this evening in Malaga.

A great effort there from Emma Raducanu.

Started the match with a few nerves but then she settled in.

Understandably, she felt the pressure at the end trying to close it out but kept here nerve brilliantly.

Fantastic support for team GB and a great start for them.

I think relief there for Raducanu.

You get a little bit tighter and feel tension.

That was the issue for Emma Raducanu, double faults came into play. You start to maybe overthink.
