I really like what I saw there from Ben Shelton - it wasn't easy but he brings the energy.

It's opening day, the stands are filling out, and Ben loves that crowd.

    Shelton 6-3 Buse

Not the way Ignacio Buse would have wanted this set to end.

Ben Shelton breaks thanks to a double fault from the Peruvian to put him in a position to serve for the first set.

The American then saves three break points on his own serve - with a 132mph ace included - to put himself in front after 34 minutes.

He was made to work for it.

  9. Mensik breakspublished at 17:40 British Summer Time

    *Mensik 7-6 4-2 Jarry

What a response from Jakub Mensik.

The 19-year-old has his racquet up in front of his face and somehow returns Nicolas Jarry's vicious serve, before the Chilean overcooks an attempted forehand winner and Mensik breaks back.

The Czech then holds and moves within one break of taking the second set.

    Shelton 4-3 Buse*

A first test for the Peruvian but he passes it.

Ben Shelton wins a couple of points against serve for the first time in the match but Ignacio Buse sees it out to hold.

The American is still looking comfortable on his own serve though and his second ace of the match helps him on the way to another hold as he turns to his coaches and shakes his racket in celebration.

It's not just the smile back on Emma Raducanu's face that tells you she's feeling better about her game these days.

She'll have a good rest now before the second round on Wednesday.

    Oh hello!

Nicolas Jarry trailed 3-0 less than 10 minutes ago, now he breaks and will serve to level the set.

Jakub Mensik looked to be in complete control, but Jarry has remained aggressive and is taking the game to his teenage opponent at every opportunity.

  14. Shelton holdspublished at 17:31 British Summer Time

Emma Raducanu, speaking on court after her victory: "I'm very, very pleased to have won that match. My first win here since 2021 so it's extra special. First round draws are always difficult, especially in a Slam. I was so happy with how I came through that.

On playing Ena Shibahara: "Playing Ena is really tricky. she obviously came through qualifying and you feel you have an advantage by playing on the surface so I'm pleased with how I managed myself.

On playing with happiness: "Yeah I'm very happy. I've got amazing people in my corner. it makes every day of work more pleasurable.

On enjoying New York: "A must is always Central Park but for me I love going to the galleries here. I got a recommendation from my Nonna to go to the Frick collection so I'll go there.
