    You always felt Fearnley had a decent chance tonight. Kyrgios has barely played since October 2022 after all.

    But you did wonder how he would cope with Kyrgios's huge serve and how regularly he would be able to get into the receiving points.

    Fearnley has done an excellent job.

    He has managed to get 34 return points back in play during the match, including those which helped him take control of the tie-break and claim this early break in the second set.

    All the talk before the match - including from myself - was how the John Cain Arena would be boisterous bordering on feral.

    Loads of lashed-up Aussies creating a hostile atmosphere which might intimidate Fearnley.

    One Aussie journalist described it as going to be a “zoo”.

    Well, the animals are sleeping at the moment. Kyrgios needs to shake the cage.
