Carlos Alcaraz spoke after his victory against Djokovic: "It is a great feeling to be in the final again.

"It was not the best level today, but I kept a good level from the start to the last point. I think I served pretty well which was important today. I tried to play a physcial match and I think I did it.

"In general, I played great tennis and I am happy to be at my second final at the US Open."

He can beat everyone else even at the age of 38, but he just can't beat these two.

How much longer is he going to want to keep trying to do so?

Djokovic received applause from the backroom staff as he departed Arthur Ashe and headed down the tunnel.

Not something you see very often but so much respect here for the man who has won four titles at Flushing Meadows.

How many more times will we see him there? Is it the end of that era? Who knows.

The mind is sharp but the body is slowing giving up on him.

Alcaraz will go for a second US Open title and a sixth major title overall on Sunday.

Will it be another chapter in the Sinner v Alcaraz rivalry? At least one of them has featured in the last seven Grand Slam finals with two of the three this year contested by both.

    Djokovic 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 2-6 Alcaraz

Just too good from Alcaraz and he dominates this semi-final against Djokovic to book his place in the US Open final.

A brilliant performance from the Spaniard.

So close but so far for Djokovic. A warm hug at the net from the great champion.

Oh no. Not what you want to see.

I think Djokovic wants to carry on playing and take these two guys [Alcaraz and Sinner] on.

The grim reality is that he has lost his last eight sets against those two combined.

    *Djokovic 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 2-5 Alcaraz

While Djokovic continues to wear a pained expression Alcaraz is still looking pretty untroubled.

Another hold on the board and Djokovic will serve to stay in the match.

Even if Djokovic had won that second set, there wouldn't have been very much left in the tank anyway.

This twto hours and 18 minutes has taken a lot out of him - and we have known him to play five hour matches. There is no way he could do that today.

    Djokovic 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 2-4 Alcaraz*

Djokovic is having to be smart with his movement. Some of the shots coming off the Alcaraz racquet he just knows he's not going to reach so he's not even trying. Conserving energy and all that.

He takes the hold, though and that will give him a boost.

    *Djokovic 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 1-4 Alcaraz

A brilliant lob from Alcaraz is applauded by Djokovic before he sends down another ace for game point.

    Just keep hitting those, Novak.

  12. Postpublished at 22:34 British Summer Time

    *Djokovic 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 1-4 Alcaraz

Djokovic is having to work at least twice as hard as Alcaraz to win his points.

An ace will do the trick, though, and he produces one for 30-0.

  13. Alcaraz holdspublished at 22:31 British Summer Time

    *Djokovic 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 1-4 Alcaraz

Woops. Double faults are catching it seems. Alcaraz begins his service game with one but regroups to pummel a forehand winner past Djokovic.

The Serb does not look to be moving particularly well and Alcaraz takes advantage, securing the hold with an ace.

Djokovic is weary, and even his camp is weary now. They have stopped shouting their directives at him.

  15. Alcaraz breakspublished at 22:29 British Summer Time

    Djokovic 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 1-3 Alcaraz*

Djokovic saves the first break point but agonisingly concedes the break with another double fault.

That's two in one game and this looks like it's only going one way.

  16. Can Alcaraz make US Open history?published at 22:28 British Summer Time

    *Djokovic 4-6 6-6 (4-7) 1-2 Alcaraz

    David Law
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Alcaraz is trying to do something that no man in the open era has done before - win the US Open without dropping a set.

Rafael Nadal and Ivan Lendl both got to the final without dropping a set, but lost a set in the final.

Four more sets, and Alcaraz has done something never done before.

  17. Alcaraz break pointspublished at 22:27 British Summer Time

    *Djokovic 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 1-2 Alcaraz

Djokovic tries the serve and volley but it doesn't pay off. He's trying things, though.

What he won't have meant to do is skew a forehand off the edge of his racquet on the next point.

That's followed by a double fault and a very tired looking second serve.

    Alcaraz has two break points.

  18. Alcaraz holdspublished at 22:24 British Summer Time

    *Djokovic 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 1-2 Alcaraz

A minor scare for Alcaraz at 30-30 but the Spaniard powers ahead and takes the hold with a powerful ace.

After the excitement of set two it all seems somewhat subdued now. Everyone knows just how difficult this would be for Djokovic to turn around.

He takes the hold to 30 but he knows the body will likely not hold out for a big five setter here.

    Djokovic 4-6 6-7 (4-7) Alcaraz

    Annabel Croft

Carlos Alcaraz has almost double the amount of winners, 13 compared to seven.

Looking at the net points, 11 of 18 for Djokovic - this tells you how much he wants to keep the points short. Alcaraz has a very high hit rate with eight out of 10.

Only one more point overall for Alcaraz, isn't that extraordinary?
