Janice Tjen has played over 100 ITF World Tennis Tour matches since becoming professional, but you could maybe double or triple that with the college matches she has played as well. She has amassed a huge amount of tennis.

Her confidence levels, her understanding of her game and her understanding of the patterns in games will be up. She will have to test all of that at a higher level here, but she has already won 69 matches this year.

Not sure if it was just me, but I thought Emma Raducanu looked a little tense in her facial expression during the warm-up.

As we well know, she does usually feel a little nervous in the mornings before switching into 'game mode'.

That solid service game - getting the backhand slice going to draw mistakes out of Tjen - was a settler.

It is not just in Indonesia where Janice Tjen is starting to gain attention.

The 23-year-old is catching the eye of tennis fans across the world following a rapid rise.

In May 2024, Tjen was unranked as she completed her sociology degree at Pepperdine University in California.

What followed over the next 16 months was remarkable. Tjen won 100 of her 113 matches on the first-rung ITF World Tennis Tour - lifting 13 titles at backwater events from Belgium to China to New Zealand.

Could she step up at do it at the highest level? You betcha.

After coming through US Open qualifying, Tjen stunned 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova on her tour-level debut.

When Emma Raducanu found out she was scheduled to play one of the first matches on the US Open's new Sunday start, it brought a bit of added pressure.

The British number one went into the meeting with Japanese qualifier Ena Shibahara having not won a match at Flushing Meadows since her memorable 2021 title triumph.

Despite a few morning nerves, Raducanu needed only 62 minutes to secure a 6-1 6-2 victory and register the quickest Grand Slam main-draw victory of her career.

"When I saw the Sunday schedule, I thought first day, first match at 11am - you don't want to be out of the tournament by 12:30pm on a Sunday," Raducanu, ranked 35th in the world, told BBC Sport.

"That definitely was on my mind.

"At the same time, if it goes well you get the afternoon off, which is really nice before your day off in between matches."

  9. Tjen inspired by Raducanu's 2021 runpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 27 August

    Raducanu v Tjen

Janice Tjen was a student at Pepperdine University in California when Emma Raducanu won the US Open as a qualifier in 2021, and she says watching Raducanu's exploits inspired her to a career in the professional game.

"When Emma won the tournament and [was] having an incredible run here, I was actually in college and I was injured at the time, so I got to watch a lot of tennis," said Tjen.

"Just seeing her doing it made me inspired to be able to do it as well. Everyone loves Emma at home. She's a very well-known player and I'm just excited for the opportunity."

Tjen, 23, beat 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova in round one to become the first Indonesian player to win a singles match at a Grand Slam for more than 20 years.

On Sunday, Emma Raducanu ended a wait of almost four years for a victory at the US Open.

The British number one, who had not won a match at Flushing Meadows since her memorable 2021 triumph as a teenage qualifier, eased through to the second round with a straight-set victory over Ena Shibahara.

"I thought it was a very clean performance, especially for the first round where there are nerves," said the 22-year-old.

"I broke a barrier of not winning a match here for four years. It is a relief. I'm happy to have stopped that and feel I can keep going without that in my head."
