Rafael Nadal would have loved these conditions. Imagine how difficult he would have been to beat out here.

  2. Zverev break pointspublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 9 June

    Zverev 3-6 2-2 Alcaraz*

Alcaraz plays a lovely drop shot that Zverev just can't get to in time then misses the forehand to hand Zverev two break points.

    Zverez 3-6 2-2 Alcaraz*

He needs to be careful here does Alcaraz because he's not in full of control of this match. He's sort of in and out.

    Zverev 3-6 2-2 Alcaraz*

Alcaraz misses the overhead smash then sends his forehand long for 0-30.

He keeps looking up at the sun, perhaps he's struggling to see the ball at the moment with it blazing down on Philippe Chatrier.

    Zverez 3-6 2-2 Alcaraz*

Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the conditions today are making the drop shot really difficult because of how lively it is.

    Zverev 3-6 2-2 Alcaraz*

Zverev needed that. A simple hold to love to settle some frustration.

    We remain on serve.

Kudos to the guy who has adapted the traditional French Open bull-fighting call - you know the one - to Alcaraz's diminutive name.

    "Car-li-to to-to to-to-to tooooo!"

The Spanish fans are having fun and making themselves heard as their man continues to lead.

    *Zverez 3-6 1-2 Alcaraz

Zverev has to change his attitude because that's only going to encourage Alcaraz.

    *Zverev 3-6 1-2 Alcaraz

Solid game from Alcaraz to keep the pressure on and, it seems, irritate Zverev even further.

The fourth seed once again shouts up to his box.

    Zverev 3-6 1-1 Alcaraz*

What a shot. Up goes the fist from Alcaraz as he nails the passing forehand.

Zverev wants the chair umpire to have a look at that but it's a long way in.

    Zverev 3-6 1-1 Alcaraz*

The wind is picking up on Philippe Chatrier and that seems to be playing a part in how these games are going. Both players are trying to find the right balance.

Zverev is standing way back from the baseline to receive.

  12. Zverev holdspublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 9 June

    Zverev 3-6 1-1 Alcaraz*

Zverev takes the hold. That feels like an important one for his own confidence if nothing else.

The forehand wasn't working for him there and he struggled to get back on track.

    *Zverez 3-6 0-1 Alcaraz

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

Zverev can have a dodgy forehand at times and in these conditions, that can be a nightmare. If you start to hesitate and doubt yourself then there's going to be a lot of balls leaving the strings too quickly.

    *Zverev 3-6 0-1 Alcaraz

Oh dear. Zverev looks pretty downcast as he balloons a forehand out of court for deuce.

The German looked on his way to a straightforward hold but here we are.

    Zverez 3-6 0-0 Alcaraz*

    Greg Rusedski
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

Zverev is trying to make this a more interesting match because it's been all Alcaraz so far.

    *Zverev 3-6 0-1 Alcaraz

Another break point comes and goes for Zverev.

This time Alcaraz sticks the backhand to take the hold.

That feels big. It looked straightforward for the Spaniard but he had to save three break points to take that hold.

Zverev threatens to use his racquet as a pickaxe - by ploughing it into the clay.

He thinks better of it, of course.

But his exasperation is clear after his usually-potent backhand lets him down.

The German regains focus quickly, though, as he gets back to work.

  18. Postpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 9 June

    Zverev 3-6 0-0 Alcaraz*

Alcaraz nails the passing forehand to save break point then double faults to give the world number four another go.

This is turning into a very important game.

    Zverez 3-6 0-0 Alcaraz*

    Greg Rusedski
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

There's much more depth from Zverev with his shots now. You have to be on the front foot with Alcaraz otherwise you're doing a lot of running.

    Zverev 3-6 0-0 Alcaraz*

Alcaraz uses the serve and volley to good effect then comes into the net and looks to scoop the drop shot over the net but can't quite get the height he needs.

The Spaniard looks to use the serve and volley again but he thinks Zverev's return is going out. It's not! Another break point opportunity for the German.
