  4. A rivalry to replace the 'Big Three'?published at 16:14 British Summer Time 13 July

    Sinner v Alcaraz

For nearly two decades, the rivalry between the Big Three - Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal - dominated tennis.

The Serb is the only remaining active player of the three, while Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will compete in a second consecutive Grand Slam final.

So is their rivalry tennis' new match-up?

"You cannot compare what the 'Big Three' did for 15-plus years. [Our rivalry] is not that big yet," said Sinner.

"This is the second consecutive Grand Slam that we are in the final and playing each other - I believe it's good for the sport.

"The more rivalries we have from now on, the better it is, because people want to see young player going against each other."

Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC One

There have been so many great rivalries in tennis. They [Sinner and Alcaraz] remind me of Nadal and Federer, myself and Bjorn Borg.

That's what makes it great. The way they behave out there is completely different but both equally effective.

Sinner was only one point away from winning the French Open. You have to move on from losses and think that it's just another game. This will be a bigger match for Sinner - his first Wimbledon win.

Alcaraz is going to try and outplay Sinner, just like Dimitrov did for the first two sets. Carlos is one of the best players I have ever seen. He has one of the best attitudes and is one is the most complete players. That is so impressive. When Alcaraz brings his 'A' game, he is unbeatable.

    Sinner v Alcaraz

This will be the second time that these two generational talents face one another in a Grand Slam final.

But, you suspect, it will not be the last.

Despite the brutal fashion in which he lost the French Open in five sets, there was genuine warmth between Sinner and Alcaraz after the match at Roland Garros.

"It's a huge honour for me to share the court again with Carlos," Sinner said.

"Hopefully it will be a good match like the last one - I don't know if it will be better because I don't know if that's possible but we will try - hopefully it will be an enjoyable match."

These matches are so multi-layered. They take many twists and turns, even during the course of a match.

Even their rivalry, the same way we saw with Djokovic and Nadal or Federer and Nadal, matches evolve over time.

It’s interesting to see if there are any changes that have taken place [since the French Open final].

  15. Alcaraz edges head-to-headpublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 13 July

    Sinner v Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz has won eight of his 12 matches against Jannik Sinner - including the last five.

Since the start of his title-winning run at the China Open in September 2023, Sinner has lost just 11 of the 127 matches he has contested - meaning almost half of his losses in that time have been to Alcaraz.

However, the last time these two met at Wimbledon in 2022, it was Sinner who came out on top.

The last time Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner met in a Grand Slam final it turned into an epic encounter lasting almost five and a half hours.

Now, 35 days on from that French Open thriller, they will meet again in Sunday's men's final at Wimbledon.

After ending Novak Djokovic's hopes of achieving a 25th Grand Slam title, world number one Sinner was asked what fans could expect when he faces Alcaraz once again.

"We saw the last final - you never know [what will happen]," he said.

"Hopefully it's going to be a good match like the last one, I don't know if it can be better because I don't think it's possible.

"But we will do our best."

There are a number of factors that turn an exciting rivalry into an epic, enduring duel that transcends the sport.

The core talent. The blend of personalities. The gripping encounters on the biggest stages.

The tussle between Italy's Jannik Sinner and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz - ranked one and two in the men's game - has all those components.

It also has arguably the most important ingredient: each player being pushed to a greater height by the other.

On Sunday, the pair will meet again in the Wimbledon final - where Sinner aims to win his first title and Alcaraz bids for a rare third in a row.

A renewal of their acquaintance at the All England Club comes just 35 days after Alcaraz beat Sinner in an all-time classic French Open final.

Asked about their rivalry, Alcaraz said: "I'm not going to say I'm feeling like when Rafa [Nadal] and Roger [Federer] are playing.

"But I'm feeling like it is a different energy when we are facing each other than other players."
