Carlos Alcaraz had Jannik Sinner moving backwards and could have played any shot he wanted there, but the execution on the drop shot was poor.

The deft drop shot dragging Sinner into the net, the lob flying over his head. Sumptuous.

Spare a thought for my colleagues who have to put the highlights reel together for this one.

Another terrific rally is polished off with an overhead smash by Sinner for 15-0.

Alcaraz has often got the better of the Italian in the longer baseline rallies, though. The Spaniard just wears him down.

That's another heck of a shot from Sinner though kissing the line for 30-15.

In the blink of an eye Alcaraz has another hold on the board.

He slams down two huge serves, one out wide and one down the T, to get that latest hold on the board in rapid time.

Sinner moves to game point then smashes an ace down to wrap it up.

A tough deuce game for the top seed.

WHAT DID WE JUST WITNESS?! Blimey.

That 'tweener from Sinner was out-rage-ous. Pure instinct. Then he bangs the drive volley wide. Pure pressure.

    Sublime to the ridiculous.

As was the low volume of the 'out' call.

Nobody knew what the decision was until the scoreboard ticked over. But let's not spoil the fun - one to revisit later.

    *Sinner 4-6 6-4 2-3 Alcaraz

Alcaraz misses the backhand at 30-30.

Another stunning point follows as Sinner goes for the between-the-legs shot on the half volley and Alcaraz tries to lob the Italian but he reaches it.

It looks like he'll have the game wrapped up but he misses the overhead smash. Wow. Deuce.

The match clock rolls around to two hours.

Sinner produces two massive aces either side of a missed forehand.

Only his second and third of the match. Alcaraz has 11.

Jannik Sinner maintains a very consistent level, and that beats most people.

But if he drops his level, Carlos Alcaraz will get on top very quickly. He's waiting for something to happen.

This is a really pivotal period coming up.

    *Sinner 4-6 6-4 2-3 Alcaraz

Sinner keeps pace with Alcaraz to get to 30-30 but a long forehand from the baseline hands him game point before Sinner nudges just wide down the line.

This is the end of the court that Carlos Alcaraz has been struggling with.

Generally, when you're serving at the Royal Box end, you're dealing with a bit of a breeze. He'll be hoping for a much quicker game here.

It's so difficult to say which way this is going to go - I keep swaying, to be honest with you.

I keep feeling like Alcaraz is getting things back on track and he's in control a little bit, then something will happen and it swings you back the other way.

There really is nothing to split them at the moment.

There are a few more unforced errors creeping into both of their games - I think it would have been impossible to sustain that extraordinarily high level that we've witnessed for close to two hours.

An efficient hold to love on the board for Sinner.

He's won 100% of points behind his first serve so far in this set.

What I feel Darren Cahill has done best with Jannik Sinner's game is make him more of a transition player.

He doesn't volley as well as Carlos Alcaraz does at the net, but he has improved significantly.

You know when there's so much hype around a big sporting occasion and sometimes it just doesn't deliver on its promises?

Absolutely no danger of that here - it's been an absolute cracker so far.

Sinner's forehand is long and that's a hold to 30 for Alcaraz.

We remain on serve in set three.

  18. Postpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 13 July

Sinner manoeuvres to 30-30 on the Alcaraz serve but a trademark forehand winner from the Spaniard gives him game point.

  19. Postpublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 13 July

Unusual for Sinner to react at all but it certainly doesn't happen often when he loses the point.

He holds his hands up in frustration as he misses the forehand.

Just shows how much this really means to the Italian.

It's really when you look back at the big three and their movement, you never saw Roger Federer sliding like this, it was Novak Djokovic who brought that in.

They have the best parts of those players' games, and they have taken it to the next level.
