There are so many qualifiers that have come through that used to be in the top 16, or top eight and so many have won tournaments. It is completely different now to the 1990s when I was playing.

Ryan Day's 10-8 victory over Barry Hawkins 10-8 on Wednesday means that the record for the most seeded players falling at the first hurdle has been equalled.

In 1980, eight seeds lost their opening match, and that tally was matched in 1992, 2012 and now again in 2024 with defending champion Luca Brecel, out first.

Given Ronnie O'Sullivan has got an 8-1 lead over Jackson Page, realistically for it to go Jamie Jones will have to overturn a 5-4 deficit against John Higgins when they resume this evening (19:00 BST).

    Afternoon everyone,

Anyone fancy a few frames? And it could only be a few to be honest given the way seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan started his first-round match against Jackson Page.

The Englishman went 8-1 up on Wednesday and will be looking to rattle off the last couple of frames he needs to progress without getting to the mid-session interval today.

On the other table, David Gilbert, who knocked out defending champion Lua Brecel, takes on Robert Milkins in the first of the second-round matches to get under way,
