A care home in Leicester has failed its first ever inspection by a healthcare watchdog.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) said it visited Greenacre Park, which opened in Elmdon Drive, Humberstone, in 2023, after "serious concerns" were raised.

In a report, external, compiled in September and October, inspectors highlighted multiple issues raised by staff and relatives, and gave it the rating of "requires improvement" in all areas.

The care home provider said it had started to implement improvements with the support of the city council, adding its priority was "to provide the best care" for its residents.

Care plans 'abysmal'

During the visit, inspectors said they found "numerous" care records had not been reviewed "for several months" and were "not reflective of the person's current needs", the Local Democracy Reporting Service reported.

For one resident with diabetes, daily monitoring was not "always adequately completed", meaning they were "at increased risk of deterioration" in their health.

Another person's evacuation plan advised they needed two people to support them in the event of an emergency, but no guidance was provided on "how to safely do this".

A family member told inspectors the "jury [was] still out" when asked if they felt their loved-one was safe.

Meanwhile, a staff member said they were "figuring it out as [they] go" in response to whether they felt confident responding to needs, while another branded care plans "abysmal".

CQC inspectors also found several residents' bed linen stained and dirty, with a staff member saying "urine stain was still present".

"Numerous" infection concerns were found in the kitchen, including out-of-date food and the report stated there had been "repeated incidents due to lack of action taken" and opportunities to learn from incidents and prevent recurrence were missed.

A spokeswoman for Greenacre Park said since the inspection, the provider had "stabilised the home's leadership team, including appointing an interim manager".

"We've been working closely with the Leicester City Council multi-agency team and made significant progress in improving care," she added.
