A charity wants to convert a vacant building in north Devon into a day centre for the elderly and vulnerable.

Age Concern has submitted plans to add two small extensions to a former shopmobility centre, next to Barnstaple's bus station.

It said the addition would be a "valuable contribution" to Barnstaple and wider area.

The application will be considered by North Devon Council.

'Independent living'

The charity said the new facility would help reduce "loneliness and isolation, improve health and wellbeing and support independent living".

The shopmobility centre, Go North Devon, loaned wheelchairs and scooters to people with mobility problems, but closed last year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Age Concern said it intended to bring back a loan service and will provide space for wheelchair storage in the extension space and a lobby.

The scheme would maximise the use of space and provide a "cosier atmosphere in living areas," it said.
