A long-standing stone bus shelter has been destroyed after being hit by a car at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to Cirencester Road, near Minchinhampton, shortly before 17:00 BST on Sunday where paramedics checked the three occupants of the vehicle.

The shelter, which stood close to Burnt Ash Farm stables and the Ragged Cot pub, was left in ruins with rubble scattered across the roadside.

A Gloucestershire Constabulary spokesperson confirmed officers were called "following reports that a driver had collided with the bus stop". The car was later recovered from the scene, they added.

The area is regularly used by commuters and is one of the key routes from Stroud and Nailsworth into Cirencester.

The shelter was maintained by Stroud District Council.
