Musicians in Kuwait struggle with censorship

While the music industry in the Gulf is a lucrative one, government censors are proving a big barrier to commercial success for some artists.

Last month Virgin Megastore, the region's biggest music retailer, closed its flagship branch in Kuwait City.

That was after a major record distributor said it was closing its operations in the country, citing over-zealous censorship.

While Kuwait's example may be extreme, it is not uncommon for lyrics or songs to be dubbed or banned outright in the region.

So what is the music industry doing to work around these restrictions?

Howard Johnson reports.
