The school where children set the rules

Among the documentaries in the running for a Gotham Award in New York next week is Approaching the Elephant, which chronicles the first year in the life of a free school in New Jersey.

The school is an institution that would probably make those who believe in a traditional approach to education shudder.

Children choose what to learn, they call meetings, vote on issues and create rules.
