Report contributor Sir Brian Jarman: 'Patients should be heartened by this'

Poor standards of care at 14 NHS hospital trusts in England are expected to be revealed on Tuesday by an inquiry into high death rates.

Professor Sir Brian Jarman who contributed to the report, said he had alerted successive governments about high death rates over more than a decade, but his warnings were ignored.

However Former Health Secretary Andy Burnham said the claim that he ignored warnings was "utterly false".

Sir Brian found higher-than-expected death rates from 2005-6 to 2011-12.
