Doctors warned of 'over-treating' patients

Doctors' leaders have announced a major initiative to stop unnecessary tests and treatments being given to patients.

In a paper in the British Medical Journal, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges says some patients are given pills or have tests they do not need by doctors who feel under pressure to act.

Areas for scrutiny are likely to include medication for depression and mild cases of high blood pressure, and unnecessary blood tests.
