GM food: Paterson warns UK risks being 'left behind'

The Environment Secretary Owen Paterson warned that the UK and Europe risk being left behind as the rest of the world begins to accept genetically modified food.

He claims GM products are even safer than conventional food - and says "emotion" rather than "evidence" is putting people off them.

Last year about 170 million hectares of GM crops were cultivated in 28 countries. Apart from the US, the world's leading growers are Brazil, Argentina, Canada and India.

But across the whole of the EU, only one GM plant is grown commercially.
