Entwistle was right to go, says Theresa May

The BBC's Director General, George Entwistle, has resigned less than two months after taking up the job.

He had come under mounting pressure over a report on the Newsnight programme, which wrongly implicated the former Conservative party treasurer, Lord McAlpine, in allegations of child abuse.

The BBC and Newsnight were already under intense scrutiny for dropping an investigation into Jimmy Savile.

Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, the Home Secretary, Theresa May said Mr Entwistle was right to resign.
