Veteran remembers WWII Battle of the Atlantic

Commemorations are under way for the 70th anniversary of the climax of the Battle of the Atlantic, which was the longest continuous military campaign in World War II.

More than 66,000 Allied merchant seamen, sailors and airmen lost their lives, with 175 Allied warships and 5,000 merchant ships destroyed.

More than 750 Axis U boats and 28,000 sailors were lost in the battle which lasted from 1939 until 1945.

Ninety-year-old Royal Navy veteran Derek Traylen spoke to the BBC's Robert Hall about his experience at sea.

He described seeing "a torpedo coming straight for us... it missed us by yards".
