UK storms: Michael Fish's forecast for England and Wales

A storm forecast to hit parts of England and Wales on Sunday and Monday is not due to be as severe as the great storm of 1987, according to the veteran forecaster, Michael Fish.

A Met Office amber alert for high winds in southern Wales, southern England, much of the Midlands, the East, and London and the South East is in place.

There is also concern about possible heavy rain, falling trees, building damage and gusts of up to 80 mph (120 kph) - or possibly higher - on exposed coasts.

Fish, who famously denied that a hurricane was on the way the day before the 1987 storm hit, told BBC News that new technology allows forecasters to warn the public of major weather events earlier.
