UK doctor Abbas Khan 'murdered' in Syrian jail

British doctor Abbas Khan has "in effect" been murdered by the Syrian authorities, Foreign Office Minister Hugh Robertson has said.

Mr Khan, a 32-year-old orthopaedic surgeon from Streatham, south London, travelled to the city of Aleppo last year to help civilians. He was arrested last year.

Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said Mr Khan committed suicide using his pyjamas to hang himself.

But Hugh Robertson said the death of the doctor was "at best extremely suspicious".
