Stephen Lawrence: Trust in police like back in 80s, says Macdonald

The former Director of Public Prosecutions, Lord Macdonald, has criticised the response of the head of the Metropolitan Police to a report revealing that officers spied on the family of Stephen Lawrence.

The Met Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe told the BBC that he could not account for the mass shredding of documents in 2003 but that he intended to appoint an independent auditor to help oversee the search for them.

The former Director of Public Prosecutions, Lord Macdonald, spoke to Radio 4's PM programme and likened the culture of policing like that of the 1980s.
