Michael D Higgins calls for apology for victims of NI violence

Everyone who inflicted violence in Northern Ireland should apologise to their victims, the Irish President has said.

Michael D Higgins was speaking ahead of his state visit to Britain, the first trip of its kind since the Republic of Ireland became an independent state.

The BBC's Fergal Keane asked Mr Higgins if he believed the victims of violence deserved an apology.

He replied: "Oh yes, of course I do, on all sides."
