Former Nato commander's warning over UK's defence future

The former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander of Nato, General Sir Richard Shirreff, has warned that it is "questionable" whether the UK could still defend itself - and may not meet its commitments under the Nato treaty - as a result of cuts to defence spending.

Speaking on the BBC's HARDtalk programme, he also said Nato was unlikely to be able to effectively repel an attack from Russia on one of the Baltic States that are members of the Alliance.

The full interview with General Sir Richard Shirreff is on HARDtalk with the BBC's Stephen Sackur on BBC World on Friday 13 March at 0430, 0930, 1830 GMT
