Storm Desmond: Residents rescued by boats and dinghies

Torrential rain and severe gusts have brought more floods and disruption to parts of northern England and Scotland.

More than 1,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in parts of Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.

Provisional figures suggest 352mm of rain fell in 24 hours in the Lake District - which would be a new British record if verified, the Environment Agency said.

The Army has been called in to help emergency services rescue stranded residents.
