Lincolnshire libraries face axe in £2m budget cut

Two thirds of Lincolnshire's libraries may be closed as part of the county council's plans to cut £2m from its budget.

A total of 32 out of 47 libraries may close and 11 villages could have their mobile library service cut as part of the plans.

Ibis Channell, who lives in Greatford, said: "I think the rural communities do miss out on county funds and it's another way of us being marginalised."

The council, which is run by a coalition of Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Independents, said changes needed to be made as 82% of people living in the county do not use a library.

Council leader Martin Hill said: "Lifestyles are changing and frankly our current library service is designed for the 1960s.

"If any community wants to set up a library in a village hall, we will help them stock it - the only thing we won't be able to do is man it."
