Film found of World War Two lost love letter recipient

A love letter to a World War Two airman, sent to him while he was stationed in Ceylon - now Sri Lanka - in 1945 has been found in a supermarket's lost property box.

The letter from "Dorothy" to leading airman "Harry" Hughes was found by checkout operator Stacey Adamson at Asda's Leigh branch in Greater Manchester.

Using information from the letter, she searched found footage of LAC Hughes on the North West Film Archive's website, posted there as part of Calling Blighty, external, a project identifying servicemen featured in a series of films shot between 1944 and 1946.

In it, "Harry" speaks of Dorothy, the letter's author, reassuring her and his mother and father that he was "fine and there's nothing to worry about".

It is hoped the footage will help identify the letter's owner and lead them to be reunited with their "cherished" item.
