Vince Cable: Tuition fees report on right lines

Vince Cable has said that a report recommending the removal of a cap on university tuition fees is "broadly on the right lines".

Mr Cable, along with other Lib Dem MPs, campaigned against any increase in tuition fees in England, but the business secretary said that the UK's financial situation meant that implementing the pledge was "not possible".

The proposals set out by Lord Browne suggest a free market with charges of up to £12,000 a year for a degree course, however universities that charge more than £6,000 a year would lose a proportion of the fee to help cover the cost of student borrowing.
