Union and MP debate pension changes and strike threats

Conservative MP Matthew Hancock claimed lower-paid workers are set to benefit from changes in pensions, as they fare better in career average schemes.

But Unison Assistant General Secretary Karen Jennings said higher pension contributions from union members were a "tax on members" which would go straight to the Treasury, and would not help to boost pension funds.

Chancellor George Osborne announced plans to raise pension contributions by 3% in the Budget, but unions claim a pay freeze for many public sector workers has amounted to a pay cut. Some teachers and civil servants have since voted for strike action.
