Defence secretary announces £350m nuclear design spend

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has announced £350m is to be spent on design work on a replacement for Britain's Trident nuclear submarines.

However, the Liberal Democrats are opposed to a like-for-like replacement, and the Scottish National Party would ban the nuclear weapons if Scotland became independent.

Visiting the Faslane naval base on the Clyde in Scotland, Mr Hammond told the BBC the final decision on the replacement would not be made until 2016.
