Plebgate: Bernard Jenkin on Andrew Mitchell inquiry

The cabinet secretary was not the right person to have investigated issues around Andrew Mitchell and "plebgate" affair, said Conservative MP Bernard Jenkin.

The Public Administration Committee chairman said the investigation "failed to uncover the truth" and there were lessons to learn.

He said it was "asking too much" of Sir Jeremy Heywood to carry out work on this while "keeping the wheels on the bus of the government and support the prime minister".

The former Tory Chief Whip was alleged to have called officers "plebs" outside Downing Street in September, but he denied used the word, although he admitted swearing.
