Plebgate: Baker on Police Federation and Andrew Mitchell

A former Home Secretary said the Police Federation was in "real trouble" over the 'plebgate' claims involving former Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell and an officer at the Downing Street security gate.

Kenneth Baker, now Lord Baker, said officers "must be above politics in our country", and reckoned the federation had become "an extremely aggressive lobbying body, determined to get a minister".

Lord Baker told Andrew Neil: "You've got to re-establish trust in the police - if the country doesn't trust the police, then you're very close to lawlessness and anarchy".

Two people have been arrested since the weekend over the incident, one of whom worked for the police.
