Jeremy Hunt blames A&E crisis on Labour's GP contract changes

The health secretary has blamed increased pressure on A&E services in England on Labour's "disastrous changes" to the GP contract in 2004.

Jeremy Hunt told MPs that four million more people were using the service since the change, saying that 90% of GPs had opted out of providing out of hours care - a level of growth he described as "unsustainable".

MPs began an inquiry into the state of emergency care in England on Tuesday with NHS Confederation chief executive Mike Farrar warning that the service was on a "cliff edge".
