Succession rules for aristocratic sons and daughters

A storyline from ITV's Downton Abbey, over who should inherit the country home, is heading to the political stage.

The debate looks at whether aristocratic daughters should have the same rights as sons when it comes to inheriting estates, following changes to the rules of succession for the monarchy.

Mary Macleod, who worked for the Queen before becoming a Conservative MP, is calling for a new law to scrap rules which state younger brothers are given automatic preference over older sisters.

She debated the ideas in this authored film, where she calls for a society that is "fair, modern and equal", on BBC2's Daily Politics with Charles Mosley , the former editor in chief of Burke's Peerage.
