Lib Dem conference: Clegg on banking and housing

The Liberal Democrat leader called on his party to back a motion on economic policy, and to reject an amendment he claimed would mean "not a single extra affordable home will be built under our watch".

Nick Clegg told delegates that the party was "committed to dealing with this black hole in our finances" and he warned them against "chopping and changing" the mandate of the Bank of England.

But even he had to stick to the time limit for speeches in the debate, and he was warned in his speech to draw his remarks to a close.

Mr Clegg told his party to back the motion to "build more affordable homes now"

The leadership later won the vote, with amendments from the left-leaning Social Liberal Forum rejected.
