Lib Dem conference: Nick Clegg attacks Conservatives

Britain will be "diminished and divided" if the Tories are left to rule alone after next May's general election, Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg has said.

As the Lib Dem conference got under way in Glasgow, Mr Clegg urged his party to fight "tooth and nail" to prevent a Conservative or Labour government.

He also said taxes "must" be increased to cut the deficit after the next general election.

And he confirmed he had ditched plans for a "mansion tax" in favour of new council tax bands on high value homes.
