New physician associates treating patients in Scotland

A new type of health professional will soon be treating patients in Scotland.

The first batch of physician associates will graduate in Aberdeen. Scotland's first pilot programme has been run jointly by NHS Grampian and Aberdeen University.

Physician associates are not doctors but will free up junior doctors by taking on many of their tasks.

The PAs have a science degree, then undergo two years of medical training, followed by a one year internship.
