Daughter's hope for Violette Szabo medals

The daughter of a World War Two Resistance heroine has talked of her decision to sell her mother's posthumous George Cross.

Violette Szabo was one of four women to be awarded the medal, which is the highest honour for bravery to civilian or military personnel in non-combat roles.

Tania Szabo, who lives near Builth Wells, Powys, described her mother's work for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) and her memories of being presented with the George Cross by King George VI after she was captured, tortured, and finally executed by the Gestapo in 1945.

She is hoping the auction on Wednesday will see the medals bought "for the nation", with her preferred home for them the Beaulieu estate in Hampshire, where agents including her mother were trained.

Ms Szabo was speaking to Louise Elliott.
