Betsi Cadwaladr NHS measures to 'stabilise and strengthen' services

The health minister says the troubled Betsi Cadwaladr health board is facing "challenging times" as it suspends its chief executive after going into special measures.

Mark Drakeford told AMs on Monday the board serving north Wales had been placed in special measures following serious concerns about its governance, leadership and progress.

NHS Wales deputy chief executive Simon Dean has been asked to serve as "accountable officer" at Betsi Cadwaladr following the suspension of Prof Trevor Purt as chief executive.

Other leading figures from the Welsh NHS have also been asked to provide expert advice to the board.

Outlining the changes in the Senedd, Mr Drakeford said the measures were aimed at restoring public confidence in NHS services in north Wales.
