Libya announces ceasefire in response to UN resolution

The Libyan government has announced an immediate ceasefire in response to the resolution passed by the UN which authorised "all necessary measures" to protect civilians there.

The UN resolution supported "all necessary measures" to protect civilians, short of an occupation.

The UK Prime Minister David Cameron told MPs that RAF jets were being deployed as part of an international operation against Libya.

Before the announcement of the ceasefire, heavy fighting between troops loyal to Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi and rebel forces was reported to be continuing.

Humphrey Hawksley reports.
