Around 2,000 people are seeking refuge at an airport in the capital of the Central African Republic (CAR) in a bid to escape a surge in violence, the French military says.

The Red Cross estimates around 300 people have been killed in a series of sectarian clashes between Muslims and Christians.

Hundreds of French troops arrived in Bangui on Friday as part of a UN effort to restore law and order.
