Poignant photos of WWI downtime on the Western Front

A recently-discovered collection of images that show soldiers taking a break from the horrors of the Western Front are the subject of a new exhibition in Australia.

The photographs were developed after their negatives were found in an attic last year. They were originally taken by a French couple in northern France and sold as postcards to soldiers during World War I.

Duncan Kennedy reports.
