Afghanistan appoints first female police chief

Afghanistan's first female district police chief has officially started work in Kabul.

The appointment of Colonel Jameela Bayaz showed the government's support for the role of Afghan women in the police, an interior ministry spokesman said.

Fewer than 1% of the country's police officers are women, with those who are often facing disapproval from their own families and communities,
