Australia heatwave: Air-con surge puts pressure on power grid

The lord mayor of Adelaide says partial power grid shutdowns are being initiated because of a surge in air conditioner use during the Australian heat wave.

Soaring temperatures also halted matches at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.

Thursday saw a third consecutive day of heat above 40C, with temperatures of 41.7C (107F).

Adelaide's Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said pressure on the power grid meant temporary shutdowns for some suburbs.
