Ukraine's currency, the hryvnia, has fallen to a new low of 10 to the US dollar (17 to £1) - a reflection both of the country's political upheavals and longer-term economic weakness.

Even before the recent political upheavals, the country's economic performance was dismal, with the economy remaining smaller than it was in 1992, in the early days of post-Soviet independence.

But the political crisis has aggravated the country's longer term problems.
