Migrants crisis: EU triples search and rescue funding

European leaders have committed extra ships, planes and helicopters to save the lives of migrants in the Mediterranean.

The measures which were agreed at an emergency summit in Brussels include tripling of the money available for search and rescue.

David Cameron said Britain would send a Royal Navy flagship, but he went on to warn that those rescued would not be able to claim asylum in the UK.

The number of deaths involving migrants crossing from North Africa is now believed to have reached more than 1700 this year.
